Spotlight On Students: Ayari Kasukawa

Second Year Performance Major Ayari Kasukawa has had an eventful year placing well in the 14th Don Chrysler Competition and by winning the Cowichan Consort Competition. Congratulations Ayari!


Ms. Kasukawa was ably assisted by Jennifer Mitchell.

UVic Composition MUS105 Concert

Congratulations and well done to those who participated in the very well attended MUS105 concert!

For representing the Saxophone Class so well by their diligent rehearsal and superb presentation of the works of their peers, congratulations to Alex Tiller, Benedict Mendes, Cole Davis and Ayari Kasukawa, with Ethan Slogotski.

Thank you, to the composers, hosted by Christopher Butterfield and Anna Hostman, who included the saxophone in their pieces and thereby offered saxophone students the opportunity to participate in a unique creative process.

2019 in Review: Frederick L. Hemke Saxophone Institute

Second Year Performance Major Ayari Kasukawa participated in the 2019 Frederick L. Hemke Saxophone Institute. Ms. Kasukawa received the Bishop Travel Bursary to assist her to attend the summer institute.

A new quartet - Ross Ingstrup (s), Todd Morgan (a), Wendell Clanton (t) and Karsten Brewka (b) - presented works by Gibbons, Singelee, Bozza and Stravinsky at Christ Church Cathedral's St. Cecilia's Day Musical Open House, Nov. 23, 2019. The very popular annual event featured a wide variety of local instrumentalists and choral groups.

Sobremesa Quartet in Shawnigan: St. John's Concert Series

Members of the Sobremesa Saxophone Quartet - Baylie, Matt, Todd and Karsten - performed a recital of works by Bach, Faure, Francaix, Gershwin, Maslanka, and arrangements by members of the Quartet, at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, Cobble Hill, on Sunday Oct. 20th. at 2:30pm.

Congratulations to Our 2019 Graduates

Warmest wishes for your success, dear graduating students of the Saxophone Class of 2019. A special note of recognition to Matthew for graduating With Distinction!

Matthew has been accepted into the PDP Program at UVic. Michelle has been accepted into the teacher certification program at UBC.

Both Matthew and Michelle possess a wealth of skill in additional performance areas. Matthew has distinguished himself as Assistant Conductor of the Don Wright Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and conducted the UVic Saxophone Ensemble (Cuban Overture). He is also a competent guitarist. Michelle is a highly skilled pianist. She accompanied UVic Vocal Jazz on several occasions and conducted the UVic Saxophone Ensemble (Cascades) this past year.

As members of the highly engaged and accomplished Sobremesa Saxophone Quartet, they were finalists and winners of the Victoria Performing Arts Festival.

Michael and Kayla will be completing their undergraduate studies this coming September.

Gift of Music Scores

On several occasions, the University of Victoria Saxophone Studio has been the recipient of generous donations of instruments and scores.

Recently, the Saxophone Studio has accepted with sincere gratitude the generous donation of several ensemble scores by Maestro Giuseppe Pietraroia, Conductor-in-Residence for both Pacific Opera Victoria and the Victoria Symphony.

Thank you, Maestro (Joey), for your kind and generous donation! The scores will be catalogued, preserved, and put to good use.
